The International School of Curitiba proudly hosted the first South American Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop Conference from August 22-26, 2017. In addition to fifty ISC faculty members, 45 educators from four Central and South American countries (Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, and Costa Rica) and ten schools (Graded-The American School of Sao Paulo, Escola Americana Campinas, Chapel School-Escola Maria Imaculada, The American School of Asuncion, Asociacion Escuelas Lincoln, The Country Day School, American School of Brasilia, Escola Americana do Recife, Sant’Anna, and Aubrick) participated in the conference.
Five days of intensive work with administrators, teachers, heads of school, coaches, and curriculum developers led to a deeper understanding of what workshop practices look like in international schools, particularly in South America. International workshop consultant, Erin Kent worked with participants to develop theory and pedagogy around a workshop approach to the instruction of literacy. Participants directly applied that knowledge in a series of labsite sessions, working with ISC students in primary, intermediate, and middle school classrooms.
Additionally, a variety of teacher-led workshops supported participant’s understanding of international workshop teaching. Educators learned practical tips for managing the workshop, practiced different ways to confer with readers and writers to further support literacy development, and discussed opportunities and challenges to integrating host-language programs into a workshop approach.
Moving forward, ISC plans on hosting another regional workshop conference during the 2017-2018 school year and welcomes educators from AASSA schools to present. If interested, please contact Michele Randall at: michele.randall@iscbrazil.com
