What exactly is Miami Device?
If you take it from the words of last year’s attendees, you’ll hear phrases such as, “the best professional development experience ever,” as well as, “I wish all learning events were this engaging, fun, and relevant,” and “I truly enjoyed meeting and talking with so many people in my PLN face to face in such a small, friendly, and beautiful setting!”
Thanks to the excellent skills of Anibal Pacheco, you can see many video interviews done throughout last year’s event.
1. Inspiration
Have you seen the keynote speaker lineup? Adam Bellow will inspire you to action and put a smile on your face that will last the entirety of the event. Derek Muller will give you scientific insight on learning, technology, and the relationship between the two. You can also catch him and ask anything about his incredibly thought-provoking Veritasium videos. George Couros will reinvigorate your decision to become an educator (and possibly bring a tear to your eye). And Angela Maiers will close the event with a message for you to take back home and leave you in the warmth of knowing that #YouMatter.
2. Practical PD
Inspiration is great! It is fuel. When you get back to your school, that fuel needs to go into a functioning engine. That’s where practicality comes in. Wesley Fryer, Sarah Thomas, Vicki Davis, and Kyle Pace are just some of the featured speakers who will lead sessions that focus on how you can implement the strategies and ideas immediately upon your return to school. Tony Vincent will gladly share how you can use your device as a teacher’s pet, get your students enthused about showing what they know by creating their own puzzles, and so much more!
3. Choices & Voices
Choose from over 120 sessions delivered by 80+ speakers! The selection of topics and presenters varies the entire spectrum of education… preschool to college, science to art, classroom to district. Each of the 8 scheduled concurrent session times will have the right choice for what you are looking to learn more about. Interested in Sketchnoting? Come to Silvia Tolisano’s (@Langwitches) session, one of many 2 hour workshops we added as a result of feedback asking for longer, more hands-on sessions. Assessment? John Spencer‘s got your back. Equality & diversity? Nerissa Raschelle‘s all over it! Women in Technology? That’ll be a panel discussion including Jennifer Carey. So, Don’t worry, be Appy because @TechChef4u Lisa Johnson‘s cookin’ up all the right sessions for those looking to do anything from curation to creation.
Your professional learning network will come to life in 3D as you spend time talking and exchanging with many educators you have been learning from for years. Ask Erin Klein about her latest classroom ideas, chat with Todd Nesloney about his first year as a school principal (or about his alter ego, @TechNinjaTodd), or strike up a conversation with Dean Shareski about formative assessment, golf, or his many contributions to the educational blogosphere.
5. Leadership Track *NEW*
Open to principals, headmasters & headmistresses, superintendents, district-level policy makers, EdTech directors, administrators, school board members, and teachers currently pursuing a degree in educational leadership. The Leadership Track will focus on how to best ensure that students are getting what they deserve by empowering the top decision-makers with best practices in educational leadership in today’s digital and analog landscape.
6. Location, Culture, & Fun!
This year, the fun is getting kicked up a notch with the APPmazing race, #PoweredByiPadpalooza! Carl Hooker is the Godfather of the event that inspired Miami Device and will be organizing and running this upbeat, exciting, and hilarious challenge that will bond teams of teachers for memories that will last a longer than downloading an entire album on Napster in 1999. Speaking of throwbacks, rumors are circulating about some Atari 2600’s being available to play! (If you need to Google that, nevermind.)
You’ll be in Miami. That means sun, music, food, Latin & Caribbean cultures, beaches, style, shopping, golfing, and yes, even history! Grab some new or old friends and check out the tours to Wynwood and Little Havana* that will keep you learning into the evening while keeping your appetite in check! You’ll need the extra energy if you opt for the morning walk/run which will then be followed by morning meditation.
Breakfast & lunch? We’ve got that too! Both mornings, you will have a nice spread of delicious pastries, breads, fruits, yogurt, coffee, juices, and more for breakfast. Lunch on day 1 will be a delicious buffet of Latin and Caribbean favorites as well as salads and delectable desserts. Day 2, it’s Paella Day!!! There will be three types for all tastes and dietary considerations, Seafood; Chicken & Chorizo; and Vegetarian. There will be music to match but more importantly, there will be time to connect with others over food and drink. What could be better?!
We hope those 6 reasons have given you a good idea of what Miami Device 2015 will be all about. If you have any questions, suggestions, requests, or thoughts you’d like to share, please contact the host, Felix Jacomino at learn@miamidevice.org. We hope to see you in November!
