While translanguaging—the intentional use of a student's full linguistic repertoire—is widely recognized in theory, educators frequently ask how to implement it intentionally and effectively in their classrooms. In the unique and diverse linguistic landscape of AMISA international schools, translanguaging provides an opportunity to move past "English-only" mindsets to honor student identity, boost cognitive engagement, and foster authentic community connections.
This Translanguaging Learning Badge bridges research and practice. Participants will engage with contemporary research specific to international school contexts, explore strategies to scaffold content and design flexible language pathways without losing academic rigor. Participants will leave this experience with a toolkit of evidence-based, intentional strategies designed to foster student agency and elevate learning across each school’s unique linguistic ecosystem.
Course Timeline & Weekly Structure
Week 1: Foundations & Research-Informed Frameworks (Live Session)
Explore the core principles of translanguaging and look at recent research from international classrooms. We will analyze practical models of flexible language use and introduce frameworks for scaffolding, differentiating, and adapting content to meet the needs of multilingual learners.
Week 2: Try It Out! (Asynchronous Application)
Apply translanguaging principles directly within your unique school context. Participants will select one role-specific application from our toolkit: Classroom Teachers & Language Specialists will pilot a specific multilingual scaffold within an upcoming lesson or unit; Learning Support Specialists & Counselors can use our templates to design a translanguaging protocol for an individualized student plan; while Instructional Coaches & School Leaders can utilize our observation/audit tools to analyze language dynamics and policy alignment during a classroom walkthrough.
Week 3: Collaborative Reflection & Scaling Practice (Live Session)
Reconnect with your AMISA peers to debrief your week in the field. We will share successful student artifacts, troubleshoot common hurdles (such as managing multilingual group work or alignment with assessments), and discuss how to systematically advocate for inclusive language practices in your department or division.
