About The Badge

The MTSS Tier One Foundations Badge is a three-part workshop series designed to empower international school educators with practical tools and a clear understanding of Tier One supports within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). This series focuses on strengthening universal practices in the areas of academic instruction, behavior, and social-emotional learning (SEL) to support success for all students.

Session 1: Building Strong Tier One Foundations for Academic Success

  • Review of the MTSS framework and the role of Tier One as the foundation for all students.

  • Explore what high-quality, evidence-based academic instruction looks like at Tier One.

  • Learn how to plan and deliver lessons that include Universal Design for Learning (UDL), to provide more opportunities for active engagement.

  • Examine the use of formative assessment and data to inform whole-class instruction and differentiate based on student needs.

  • Begin reflecting on your current instructional practices and identify next steps to strengthen academic support for all learners.

Session 2: Universal Behavior Supports that Foster a Positive Classroom Climate

  • Deepen understanding of how Tier One behavior systems foster consistency, safety, and shared responsibility across all classrooms.

  • Build trust and connection with students by setting clear, consistent boundaries while responding to students with empathy, predictability, and respect, establishing yourself as a safe and reliable adult in the classroom.

  • Consider evidence-based practices that build predictable, inclusive, and supportive learning environments for every student while reducing behavior difficulties.

  • Identify effective strategies to expand your toolkit for promoting prosocial behaviors.

Session 3: Integrating Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) into Everyday Practice

  • Investigate how Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) integrates within MTSS to strengthen students' emotional regulation, empathy, and interpersonal connection.

  • Uncover core SEL competencies and determine how to embed them into daily routines and academic content.

  • Strategize how to promote universal SEL practices such as responsible decision-making, and relationship-building strategies.

  • Create custom SEL lessons catered to your students’ needs by following a simple “recipe” created by the presenter.

  • Reflect on how to promote student belonging, social awareness, and self-awareness within a diverse, international context.
