Session 1: Reading - Word Recognition
Prior to session 1, all participants will receive a short reading as a welcome and onboarding to the Science of Reading in order to frame our work throughout the badge.
The Question:
What is word reading? How do I teach a student how to read?
The Response:
Position word recognition as a central tenet of the Science of Reading
Define the components of effective word reading instruction (multimodal, systematic, explicit, synthetic, etc)
Share examples of classroom strategies that support word reading
Session 2: Reading - Language Comprehension
The Question:
What really is reading comprehension? How can I get students to read at grade level?
The Response:
Expand reading comprehension to include vocabulary, background knowledge, literacy knowledge, language structures, and verbal reasoning.
Comprehend the role of reading fluency in overall reading achievement
Share strategies for scaffolding reading instruction with grade-level texts
Session 3: Writing - Transcription
The Question:
What are transcription skills? Why do they matter for writing success?
The Response:
Connect encoding and spelling to phonics and decoding skills
Apply authentic grammar instruction for multilingual learners
Understand the importance of explicit handwriting instruction
Session 4: Writing - Composition
The Question:
What are the composition strands of Joan Sedita’s writing rope? Why do they matter?
The Response:
Re-envision the writing process for kindergarten through grade 5
Develop revision and editing skills that reinforce language, grammar, and word knowledge
Session 5: Sharing Celebration
Participants will create a personal action plan for implementing components of Structured Literacy aligned with the Sciences of Reading and Writing.
To close and celebrate, participants will be invited to share an instructional shift, classroom success story, or new learning that is being put into practice as a result of the badge. The session will also share “Top 5 Tips” for shifting to a Structured Literacy instructional framework.
